The course starts with learning about the history and fun trivia of taiko. After that, you can enjoy a demonstration by the instructor, followed by playing the taiko yourself.
Q & A
Q. Is it okay to use it for the first time?
Of course, it’s absolutely fine. Most of our participants start with no prior experience. For beginners, we take the time to teach the basics, including how to hold the drumsticks, stance, and drumming techniques at a comfortable pace. Feel free to join us without worry—we want you to enjoy the exhilaration of playing taiko drums.
Q. I can’t read sheet music, is that okay?
In our taiko lessons, we use a method called “Kuchishouga,” where sounds like “Don Don” and “Doko Nko” are vocalized as a substitute for sheet music. So, not being able to read music is not an issue at all. No prior musical experience is required either.
Q. Is it okay if I don’t have much stamina?
Absolutely, there’s no problem at all. At first, you might feel tired after the lesson or experience muscle soreness in your arms or legs, but you will gradually get used to it, and your stamina will improve as you continue attending lessons. Taiko drumming is said to be beneficial for building stamina and promoting overall health.
Q. What kind of people participate?
Approximately 90% of participants are women, with ages ranging from elementary school students to people in their 70s. Most participants start without any prior experience, and over 50% have no background in music. Anyone can start taiko at any time, so we encourage you to join a trial lesson and give it a try!
Q. Is there anything I need to prepare for the trial lesson?
Please wear comfortable clothing for the trial lesson. There is nothing special you need to prepare. Drum and bachi (sticks) rentals, as well as all learning materials, are provided for free, so feel free to join us without worry.
Q. I don’t have a good sense of rhythm, is that okay?
Rhythm is something that you will naturally develop as you participate in classes and practice. Especially at the beginning, don’t worry too much about the details of rhythm—just enjoy the experience of playing the taiko to your heart’s content.
